Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about shipping your vehicle with State Wide Auto Transport.

Pricing

How much does it cost to ship a car?

Car shipping costs depend on distance, vehicle size, transport type (open vs enclosed), season, and pickup speed. A typical cross-country shipment ranges from $800 to $1,500 for open transport. Get a personalized quote for your exact route.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. The price you are quoted is the price you pay. There are no fuel surcharges, insurance add-ons, or surprise fees at delivery.

When do I pay?

A small deposit is collected when a carrier is dispatched (not before). The remaining balance is paid directly to the driver at delivery. We accept cash, cashier's check, Zelle, and credit card (3% processing fee for cards).

Do you offer discounts for multiple vehicles?

Yes. Shipping two or more vehicles on the same route typically qualifies for a multi-vehicle discount. Call us for a custom quote.

Process

How does car shipping work?

You request a quote, choose your transport option, and book. We dispatch a licensed carrier to your location. The driver inspects your vehicle, loads it, and delivers it to your destination. You inspect and sign off on delivery.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking 1-2 weeks in advance for standard shipping. Expedited service with 1-2 day pickup is available for urgent moves at a premium rate.

Can I ship personal items in my car?

Most carriers allow a small box of personal items (up to about 100 lbs) in the trunk. However, personal items are not covered by carrier insurance. We recommend removing valuables.

Do I need to be present for pickup and delivery?

Someone 18 or older must be present to sign the Bill of Lading at both pickup and delivery. This can be a friend, family member, or anyone you authorize.

Timing

How long does car shipping take?

Transit times depend on distance. Coast-to-coast takes 7-10 days. Regional moves (under 1,000 miles) take 3-5 days. Pickup typically occurs within 3-7 days of booking (1-2 days for expedited).

Can I get my car shipped faster?

Yes. Our expedited service offers 1-2 day pickup with priority carrier matching. This costs 20-40% more than standard shipping. Call us for rush shipping quotes.

What if the carrier is late?

We provide estimated delivery windows, not guaranteed dates. Weather, traffic, mechanical issues, and other pickups on the route can cause delays. Your dispatcher will keep you updated on any changes.

Insurance & Safety

Is my car insured during transport?

Yes. Every carrier in our network carries cargo insurance as required by the FMCSA. Coverage ranges from $100,000 to $1,000,000+ depending on the carrier. We verify insurance before dispatch.

What if my car is damaged during shipping?

Damage is rare, but if it occurs: note it on the delivery Bill of Lading, take photos, and call us immediately. We help you file a claim with the carrier's insurance company.

What is the Bill of Lading?

The Bill of Lading (BOL) is an inspection report completed at pickup and delivery. It documents your vehicle's condition and serves as the legal contract between you and the carrier. Always inspect and review before signing.

Vehicle Preparation

How should I prepare my car for shipping?

Wash your car (makes inspection easier), remove personal items and valuables, reduce fuel to about 1/4 tank, disable toll transponders and alarms, check tire pressure and battery, and note any existing damage.

Can I ship a non-running vehicle?

Yes. Non-running vehicles require a winch or forklift to load, which adds $100-$250 to the price. Let us know the vehicle's condition when requesting a quote so we can match you with the right carrier.

Do I need to remove aftermarket accessories?

Remove anything that extends beyond the vehicle's profile (roof racks, spoilers, antennas) or loose items (bike racks, cargo boxes). Items that are bolted on and within the vehicle's silhouette are typically fine.
